The final call for Bulga - call Planning Minister Rob Stokes

The community of Bulga needs you to stand with them today. Call Planning Minister Rob Stokes and ask him to intervene to stop Rio Tinto's mine.

On Friday afternoon the NSW Government gave the Warkworth mine yet another trick of approval. Now there’s just one step left before the bulldozers can start destroying the Warkworth Sands Woodland. This mine would spell devastation for the community of Bulga and animals like the Glossy Black-Cockatoo and the Squirrel Glider that call this place home.

Call and leave a message asking the Minister to intervene to protect the community of Bulga and the local environment.

Minister Stokes' number is (02) 8574 6707

Let us know below if you made the call so we can make sure we keep the pressure up!

I made the call and mentioned air quality, effects on wildlife and that I am a birdwatcher who loves the area.

Called this morning to register my opposition to the mine proposal at Bulga and ask the Minister to intervene and reject the proposal. Stated that I considered there is too much habitat loss and destruction occurring in Australia and that we need to protect all species. Very polite lady noted my opposition and added my name to the register and gave me an email address in case I wanted to send a more detailed submission.

Advised that my family is dead against the mine going ahead for environmental reasons and asked whether the minister intends to stop it. Answer: ‘he hasn’t decided as yet’.

There is an inevitable move toward renewable energy and there has to be a stop to the support that this Government appears to have toward environmental degradation. This Government needs to encourage these ‘dinosaur’ companies to move into the future, developing solar thermal systems.

The number went to an answer machine so I left a rant about why it should not go ahead – jobs available for next 15 years even without the extension, damage to environment and community and climate etc etc and left my number.

I spoke to a forbearing, lady, Clair, who allowed me the time to make my point that Mt Thorley/Warkworth were rejected by both L&E Court & Appeal to Supreme Court, then disgraced former Envir. Minister, Hartcher, changed the Planning Act giving Economic benefit greater weight over Env & social in the planning process, So, rather than follow the Law, Hartcher changed the Law, to favour mining interests. Surely, a miscarriage of justice.

    Hi Daisy,

I spoke to a lovely lady by the name of Claire. She only took my name and suburb for the register of those who oppose the mine. She suggested to use the following email if I wanted to expand on my reasons:

    kind regards,

    Cheryl Sharma

Really sad that this was overturned in 2013 and the NSW government changed the rules to push through a very wrong miscarriage of justice for the people and the environment of Bulga
